Slightly Melancholy Thoughts on the Fourth of July

I felt obligated to write something in light of the fact that yesterday was the Fourth of July. For some reason this year, I didn't feel as inspired to write. It may be because I was so tired yesterday from work, but I really think it's because of where we are as a nation. Each year, it seems more and more like we are only a shell of what we once were.

While I am still hopeful, and while I still will fight for our freedom and our foundations, the reality is that we have lost something deep and I fear that we will never get it back. All the red, white, and blue, and fireworks in the world cannot take away this sinking feeling I have about our nation and how far away we are from where we began, how far away America is from God.

There was a time when even non-Christians (including our founding fathers) respected the Word of God and those in authority in the true church of Christ. Now, our society is "churched" and respects and knows personally nothing of the old, old story of the Gospel of my Lord Jesus Christ. As a nation, we are in a truly scary and sad place. That was really my general sentiment this Fourth of July. Not to say I wasn't happy, but just sobered by facing the reality of our current events and observing the general tendencies of our society and culture.

However, I cannot deny the depth of blessing that we enjoy here in this country. I cannot deny the fact that my Lord can do anything and that His will will be done and souls will be saved-regardless of the plans of men and the general decay of our country, socially, politically, and spiritually.

Hey, I think I found & subscribed to your blog last year, but this is probably my first comment. Anyway...

I understand where you're coming from. It almost seems as though our celebrations of independence are losing something. We're losing our independence as a nation through ties to groups like the U.N. We're losing our independence as individuals because so many are perfectly content to live dependent upon the government. As a result, our freedoms are eroding.

You're definitely right, this goes back to the loss of respect for God and His word. The civil leaders and citizens who see government as a replacement for God will do all they can to push Him out.

There is still hope. There are enough in this country who appreciate the Constitution and the God-given liberties that it sought to protect. We just need to keep standing.
